| About the LED Industry: |

The commercial signage market has one of the largest near-term energy potential savings. In fact, the US Department of Energy (DOE) reported if every installed neon-based sign were converted to LEDs, the technology could approximately save 81.3TBtu annually. To put this number in proper perspective, this is equivalent to the annual output of one “large” 1000MW coal power plant.
LEDs offer a new and more efficient source of light for the electric sign industry. Today, LEDs successfully compete with neon based illumination signs in brightness and energy consumption resulting in improved overall performance.
LEDs, or light emitting diodes, are tiny semiconductor “chips” mounted in a package to protect their components and help focus the light.
Whereas incandescent bulbs create light using a filament that generates heat, LEDs create light by stimulating the movement of electrons. By applying power to semiconductors, photons are created – converting 20 – 30% of input power to light. The result is the creation of visible light without unwanted infrared light.
LEDs can be packaged in unique designs and layouts, projecting light in specific directions as opposed to projecting light in every direction.
LEDs already have reached the brightness of 60mA neon, and because of significant improvements in efficiency and performance it is suggested that LED will replace high output fluorescent (HO) and metal halide technology. |
